Turris Omnia 2022

doom > tetris, I guess
(Either way it’s just playing around. I personally like LEDs embedded in corners of ethernet sockets, though I get that for such devices it makes sense to separate.)

Yeah, my colleagues are savage AF  …have seen DOOM or Wolf 3D also on pregnancy tests, though

DooM idea is cool. I would opt for display + front leds  or there can be different versions only with the display or with the leds.

The front leds are really useful to monitor what is going on. I wouldn’t like to miss them.

Apart from coolness the LED screen can also display various status or an overall status.
Indication by LEDs is much more basic but can for sure be covered by display. Remember the more status you want to monitor, the more LEDs you need. Instead you can have some sort of overall status icons displayed on display - in case of any failure (on display as well as on LEDs) you will anyways need to go into syslog or alike to do troubleshooting.

What about built-in serial to USB ?

I think the most important is to have more ram, such as 8GB min.

How about displaying the Wi-Fi QR-Code on the LED?

Cool idea, to say the least

That looks like the box I need. I will buy one. Only two things I wish anybody could tell me.
Do I need an modem for DSL (40Mbit Downstream nothing fancy) additionally? That would be annoying. Is the SFP+ Port for that? (Please dont kill me, I am noob on that)
It would be great to have a USB C power delivery implemented or optionally, that would make it way more flexibel and also well suited for outdoor ideas. That would also open the chance to use powerbanks.

Actually it was originally meant for fibre internet access. Yet in the meantime there are SFP-DSL-modems available from Allnet so you do not need an extra box (but the extra SFP-module) :upside_down_face:

thx 4 your informations

I believe that direct DSL into Omnia isn’t recommended in most cases. Typically ISPs won’t support it and it can cause trouble. (But it does work for some people, with the current Omnias.)

Typical ISP here will not support you when you connect your own DSL modem…

We do not recommend the DSL SFP modules as they are overheating (70+°C) and in such conditions the module don’t last so long (some of mine died after a year or so).

yes, if you have xDSL connection, you need modem.
I know of no DSL modem capable of running 3rd party firmware.
Yes, it’s annoying, however many DSL modems are capable of switching to bridge mode, so the authencitation and NAT may run on Turris.

Thanks for all your inputs. I am changing my location so I am about thinking to look for cable internet. (so one device less needed I guess) I hope they will release the omnia turris 2022 soon.

You will still need a modem, this time a DOCSIS one. Depending on your provider and plan, it may or may not support bridge mode.

So unfortunately, you won’t get rid of an extra device there either.

Based on my “excelent” experience with reset button hidden behind hole in MOX container (one need at least three hands to produce reset) I suggest to keep standard push button reset ;-). Moreover I suggest to add power switch to TO 2022 as it would be much more easier than pulling out power cord

thx. I guess I have to life with that. Hope that will change in future.

I don’t think it’s really an issue on Turris side. Most ISPs just don’t care about supporting other devices for the “modem”. (Maybe the HW compat choice isn’t good on their side; I don’t know.)

I dont know who is responsible. Some years ago I used a fritzbox and I think (i am not 100%s sure) it worked without a modem, but i never had it in my hands after installing it.
