OpenWRT One Released: First Router Designed Specifically For OpenWrt

Just two ethernet ports, just 1 GB of RAM and just integrated wi-fi. Disappointment.

I’d be a bit scared by the Aliexpress distribution…

Well, the thing is not intended to be any sort of high-end router, but a vehicle to:
a) an affordable development platform
b) a prototype to explore a few novel concepts (like router with battery backed RTC (the omnia just says, finally?) ) and increased resilience against being bricked…
c) bring in a bit of money for OpenWrt

IMHO it will also make a decent AP, however it is close in price to considerably more powerful models like the mt-6000. Since I was looking for a replacement AP, I ordered one, being well aware of its (limited) feature set…

hello there, also here looking at the ‘one’…since i basically run a rather standard config. ( adblock/openvpn) & i do prefer a 2.5 GB on the LAN part.
That mt-6000, is that the GL.inet GL mt-6000?

Yes, that model seems quite popular currently for folks looking for a somewhat more powerful all in one router with reasonably recent WiFi. Personally. I have never operated one, so can not say more… The One with its dual core a53s likely will not even beat an omnia (but that is not my aim, I want to replace an ath79 based AP that has been operating fr more than a decade now)

it´s main goal is possibly to be an affordable entry device to bring more ppl to openWRT and not to satisfy high end dreams. i just thought getting it as a backup and to tinker with it… but then, why bother, i can tinker with my omnia / mox just fine.

More ethernet ports and/or one wi-fi card slot is not high end dream.

hmm, hongkong based company… but the hardware seems perfect.

What i do not understand is why the one has a 2.5 G WAN, but only a 1 GB LAN.

One 2.5 PHY was part of the SoC, to change the second port to 2.5 had required to sacrifice the PCIe lanes… tha same reason sits behind the decision for usb2 instead of usb3. The outcome is that the PCIe lanes could be used for the M.2 slot…

Side note, with two real ethernet ports there is no hard wan/lan separation, so if you prefer 2.5 Gbps lan, that is easy to configure…

hmm, nothing is easy to configure when one has no clue
But i like the ‘one’ concept as in support.

I think the gigabyte one is this (page 109)
https://one.openwrt.org/hardware/MT7981B_Wi-Fi6_Platform_Datasheet_Open_V1.0.pdf#page=109
and the 2.5G one is attached to the SGMII on page 116 which can do 2.5G - possibly via this chip

It is, it would cost more. And you can possibly put one wifi card to the M2 pci-e slot with some adapter. They simply picked relatively cheap and good platform that is open as much as currently possible - Filogic 820 and used every interface it has without adding more extra stuff (like ethernet switch). Built-in wifi comes for free with the chip and it is a good one for the price.

Relatively cheap is obivously relative. It’s question, what is good for 215,37 or better 107,69 € with 50% discount. Maybe OpenWrt Two.

This is not close to the actual intended price, I guess some algorithm was just going bonkers due to the initial small production batch having run out and the next, bigger, batch not having hit the retail channels yet. Around 100EUR is the target price… but let’s see how this develops once this is available in numbers…

This e-shop is official distribution channel. That’s probably not going to help marketing at launch at all. Plus, not everyone likes fake discounts.

price without taxes in in the announcement First Router Designed Specifically For OpenWrt Released - Software Freedom Conservancy
quoting random seller’s crossed price is pretty odd argument

The price also includes donation for openwrt. If you get cheapest router with same filogic 820 (like ~35-45 eur xiaomi AX3000T from aliexpress) you get much less RAM and no expansion and need to use exploits or take it apart to install openwrt and then you need to be lucky with the various hardware revisions inside (different flash and ethernet chips), compared to that it is not bad price

EDIT: oh they link that shop in the announcement, interesting, I thought the official one is “SinoVoip Co.,Limited Banana PI” seller Banana Pi OpenWrt One MediaTek MT7981B 1GB DDR4 2.5GbE RJ45 and Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 256 MiB SPI NAND Open Source Smart Router - AliExpress 7 , anyway crossed prices are not real, taking them into any consideration is foolish

and BTW if anyone is wondering how open it is and why “Software Freedom Conservancy” made such announcement, here is older post from openwrt-devel list that summarizes the state and possibilities OpenWrt One / project update
so that also explains why this hardware was chosen

got myself one of these MT6000, has a rather big fanbase i see.
Interesting approach, and maybe the stock FW is already enough for me…( VPN, adblock).
And it’s easy to load plain openwrt on it. Also maybe enough for this nOOb

Not a bad choice… This might even be a match for an omnia… 4 a53 CPUs at 2GHz might reliably beat the dual a9…
Still, my omnia is plenty fast for my link, and I really appreciate the automatic updates from a party that I happen to trust.
