G.fast SFP worked in TOS 3, stopped working in TOS 5

Hi,

Hardware: Turris Omnia, Indiegogo, delivered in October 2016

On Oct 1 we moved from Bern, a Swiss city, to the countryside. Our new place does not have FTTH, only FTTB (the fiber comes into the building, but building-internal cabling unfortunately is copper), therefore I switched from the Fiber7 offering to Copper7 (same ISP, but using their xDSL/g.fast offering).

I found a Swiss shop having g.fast SFPs in stock (Engitech) and ordered the PROSCEND 190-T. It took me not much time to remove the FlexOptix SFP and get the g.fast SFP to work. The SFP got recognized immediately, and all I had to do was to enable PPPoE on the WAN interface and to enter the credentials my ISP provided me.

On Dec 15 my Turris Omnia got auto-upgraded from TOS 3.11.23 to TOS 5.3.3. At the time I didn’t realize the update had happened. All I noticed was that the Internet link was down, and I wasn’t able to get it up again. Reboots and tinkering, etc. nothing helped. At the time I thought the SFP got killed (it’s getting REALLY hot). At that time, I switched to the ISP’s Fritz!Box 7582 which I am running until today.

Last week I received a new SFP, and therefore I tried to debug the situation one more time knowing I had a “known-good” SFP.

After some digging around in the unfamiliar looking Foris UI I only then realized the update to TOS 5.x most probably was the culprit due to matching timestamps of when the router went offline, and when the update was applied.

I noticed the “Snapshot” functionality, reverted to TOS 3.11.23 — and the SFP worked again. I assumed TOS 5.3.5 would have fixed the issue, upgraded — and the SFP stopped working again. Downgraded again, SFP works flawlessly again.

I then came around the upgrade info about the symlink /boot/dtb, upgraded again, only to realize that the SFP driver is automatically loaded at is should be.

I researched a bit more and my understanding is that the SFP functionality of TOS 3.x has been completely revamped in TOS 5.x, and not every SFP is guaranteed to continue working.

Question: Is there any chance my SFP is going to work again in the forseeable future?

I am happy to provide logs and to debug the issue. I now also have a spare SFP lying around which I am happy to lend to an engineer, but you require a g.fast line on your side of course to really test it.

Thanks & Best,
M.

Our support guy, @Stepan, will help you and provide some ways on what you can try to do.

@emeidi Your SFP module contains invalid information in it’s EEPROM. From the information the kernel derives 1000base-x PHY mode, but the datasheet for the SFP says it needs to use SGMII.

I have prepared a patch in a testing branch for you to test. I will let you know when the testing branch is built.

In the meantime, is it possible for you to test whether the SFP works in the hbl branch? Just in case?

@emeidi can you try branch crashlab and let me know whether the SFP works? You will need to do this as soon as possible, because the crashlab branch is used for testing and some of my colleagues may overwrite it. (If you don’t have time now, I have downloaded the whole repository, but it will be a little more complicated, please let me know.)

First: Many thanks for your investigation, really appreciated. Happy to hear you could pinpoint the root cause already.

Unfortunately, I am on a weekend trip now and won’t be back before Sunday night. Sorry.

PS: I also have to figure out how to operate the Turris behind a Fritz!Box so it can update.

Ok, we are home now.

I reconfigured the Turris so it uses another IP in another IP subnet as the Fritz!Box router (as the Fritz!Box is a “drop-in” replacement for the Turris, they carried the same IP and subnet), then I enabled its DHCP server so my MacBook gets an IP of the Turris when connected to one of its LAN ports, then I changed the dbt symlink from SFP to PHY and eventually changed eth2 from PPPoE to DHCP.

I now have rebooted the router, connected the WAN port to one of the Fritz!Box’ ports. I just have issued the following command:

switch-branch hbl

and now I am waiting for it to install the latest (aka. “Here Be Lions”) branch … once this is done I then have to change the symlink back to SFP, insert the SFP module, temporarily disconnect the ADSL cable from the Fritz!Box and attach it to the g.fast SFP …

PS: I can’t select crashlab as a branch:

# switch-branch crashlab
Branch crashlab isn't a supported branch!

inconsistent: Requested package ddns-scripts_no-ip_com that is not available.

Removed package.

Installation went through:

Well, this is only partially true. This branch is meant only for development stuff, and because it is an internal branch it is not listed anywhere. Users should not be there unless there are asked, which happens in very rare cases. That’s why the name of this branch says it all.

There was an idea that we would push the fix to public devel branches and see what happens. I refused that approach, which is why the fix is only in a branch mentioned. You can switch to this branch by using --force.

@emeidi

you need to do switch-branch --force crashlab because crashlab is internal branch for testing

Thanks, just issued

switch-branch --force crashlab

let’s see what happens now  Keep you posted.

OK, give me a few minutes, I’ll try another thing, recompile the kernel and send you a command to try.

@emeidi hmm, did you restart the router after switching to crashlab? Can you send me whole kernel log?

Yes, I did reboot. Here’s the output from the reboot I initiated 2mins ago:
