Turris OS 5.4.4 is released

Dear Turris users,

From the testing branch, we released Turris OS 5.4.4 for everyone. We wanted to make sure your routers will be secured before the weekend.

Release notes for this release:
:pushpin: Updates
• Kernel to version 4.14.294
• Knot Resolver to version 5.5.3 (CVE-2022-40188)
• Unbound to version 1.16.3 (CVE-2022-3204)
• BIND to version 9.16.33 (CVE-2022-2795, CVE-2022-3080, CVE-2022-38177, CVE-2022-38178)

The update will be automatically installed for all Turris devices unless you are using delayed updates or approvals. For further details on how to approve this update, check reForis.

There is the list of known bugs, which applies to this release.

Just updated my 2016 omnia, seems to have worked without a hitch…

TO 2016, HBT branch, 2 GB, 2x WiFi, HaaS, RIPE Atlas, Sentinel, lxc, simple config, all seems OK

Friday update? I thought they were forbidden.

As I do not expect that someone from Turris team stays on weekend shift, this time I must agree with Victor… Which of CVEs was so much in a hurry?

Unfortunately, this time - I had to rollback to some older snapshot and immediately disable automatic updates as this update killed half my network. Strange. Something broke with DHCP. While at the same time it was semi functional on tp link wireless AP connected devices.

EDIT: I am back on latest version - the issue was probably due to btrfs failure that I already talked about with support. New version just did something with btrfs - I came back to old version and then updated and things are OK now. Even statistics are working again (altough old data are likely gone). And to give even more clarity - the btrfs issue happened probably due to power outage that corrupted file system of statistics component. I was thinking about buying UPS, but Omnia does not have shutdown function so I dont see how it would have really helped.

I’m checking this thread, so there is nothing to worry about. Since there was nothing urgent to reply to, that’s why I am responding to you just now. Also, there are no new tickets in support’s ticket portal.

This version was in the testing branch for 5 working days even though there was a build issue for some configurations. Users could still test the release, and the final release was prepared on Tuesday. Unfortunately, our secure release process requires to have 3 flash keepers to sign the release, but the third one showed up just on Friday. We did not want to postpone this release for more time than it should. Having up-to-date DNS resolver(s) on the router, which is not vulnerable to the recent vulnerabilities, I consider as a critical compound on the router.

Also, Knot Resolver was updated to this version on 22nd September for Turris OS 6.0. The other two resolvers were upstreamed to OpenWrt, where it was also tested.

For me this update was a fail. Omnia Indiegogo, 2GB, NAS (1xHDD, 1xSSD), LXC, Transmission, USB hub w/android phone:

The SATA disks did not mount after update. Tried multiple reboots, and also a hard shutdown, unplug and restart (this usually helps), but no bueno this time. Had to roll back to 5.4.3, which works fine.

Update ok: Turris Omnia 2017, 1 GB RAM, dead eMMC, system running from mSATA SSD, original wifi cards. Storage plugin enabled, LXC containers, tor relay, USB HDD shared over samba4 and minidlna, SQM, Hardwario gateway + MQTT IoT bridge, OpenVPN, PPtP VPN.

This looks more like a HW problem… Or a bug in kernel ATA driver, but I think that has a super low probability…

To me, it looks like the sata card is on 6gbps and not 3gbps - this is an old workaround, and there’s even a tirris package for this, but somehow it is not applied and the ata driver negotiates to 6gbps…

Also, everything works perfectly on 5.4.3.

Workaround for what?

Maybe it’s some coincidence, but soon after update to 5.4.4 I started experiencing much more frequent need to reconnect 2.4G WiFi to Omnia (from a device that had no updates recently).

Can you quantify that?

Very rare before, now several times per day (on average, clustered). Channel on auto, reselected a few times in the meantime. Around 3m distance with direct visibility – but it still could be some interference, I assume.

Btw I am still on 5.3.11, stable as hell, so far 48 days.

Is it really secure?

Didn’t have free time for updates, but nothing is secure in IT world

And what about automatic updates?
