In the previous Turris OS 5.1.7 release, there were introduced security fixes for DNSpooq vulnerability in dnsmasq, which is not used as DNS resolver by default in Turris OS. In the upstream version of dnsmasq, some of you might experience that there it was spamming your system log and this is what we fixed in this Turris OS version.
What’s new in Turris OS 5.1.8?
dnsmasq: fixes for spamming system log
kernel: updated to version: 4.14.216
msmtp: updated to version 1.8.14
youtube-dl: updated to version 2021.1.16
nextdns: updated to version 1.10.1
Fixed IPv6 routing loop on Point-To-Point links in netifd and odhcp6c
By using automatic updates, your router is going to be updated automatically. If you are using approvals or delayed updates, you should check the Updater tab in reForis.
We hope that you enjoy this release as it makes the 4th release, which we pushed to the stable branch within 2 weeks, and if there are any issues with this release, please let us know by following our article for Getting help.
You are correct. I missed including netifd and odhcp6c. I added both of them to my OP. I’m not including LuCI in release notes as almost all the time it is updated and it didn’t seem for me like I should mention it, because while looking in changes in openwrt-19.07 branch, there was just removed unused file in luci-app-sqm and this package is maintained in packages feed. But, I will try to consider it in upcoming release notes here on the forum.
Regarding dnsmaq and its full update, should I include it in the list explicitly, or is the text above it fine?
New kernel broke connection with my Z-Wave usb stick.

I’ll check it once again tomorrow, without family asking “what’s with wifi”
Hi there, since i see the 'spamming your systemlog" .Maybe one of the non nOObs can helpt this nOOb.
how do i stop cluttering the syslog with this message ? "‘rond[13005]: (root) CMD (/usr/bin/rainbow_button_sync.sh)’
that keeps nagging me for years now…
and it has to do something with the leds i think. must be some simple setting in luci, somewhere,
“The opkg update command failed with code: 2”
The list of packages appears in luci, but the packages cannot be installed.
When running the command the second time (and every time after) it succeeds:
This issue was there directly after the clean installation
Some strange kind of reinstallation of kmod-packages appeared directly after clean installation - but all of those packages where already installed. As this happened the second time this year (I updated my other TO somewhen in summer from 3.x to 5.1.0) I just ignored it and later directly updated to 5.1.8 via pkgupdate. But after this update to 5.1.8 I again got the notification that updates are pending. The complete list is as follows:
Upate: I approved this installation from the post above.
But I get this update notifications again after replacing my wireless firmware *-988x-ct by *-988x-ct-htt and *-9884-ct by *-9884-ct-htt… This time the following notifications are shown:
Looking deeper into this you can see that it tries to install almost all kernel modules which are already installed (see my list of installes modules below) or which have been removed by the updater run beforehand (see notifications above: kmod-ath10k).
To me this seems to be totally erratic which means my flash will wear out just because of nothing. This is more than bad (in addition to my unnerving problems with wireless / DNS / DHCP-issues in the 5.x versions).
Installed kernel modules at the moment:
Can someone from the turris team (@cynerd/@Pepe) please explain what this reinstallation of all those packages is good for? I just try to understand how to avoid that this happening again and again…
I’m so sorry for any inconvenience caused by this, but it looks like your issue might be caused by kernel update. Currently, we are not thinking about buying your USB stick. There is going to be a new Turris OS update soon with an updated kernel, you can give it try and let us know.
According to the screenshot and description, it could be possible that you were trying it when your router didn’t have established Internet connect, but after a few seconds, connection was established and that it was able to download the rest.
