Turris loses connection after FTTH GPON installation

Hello,

some weeks ago we changed our internet connection from dsl to fiber. I bought the sfp-module from fs.com (GPON-ONU-34-20BI) for my omnia (kickstarter-model). Installation went well: I changed the serial number of the GPON-stick to one of the fritzbox I got from my service provider. In reforis I established a PPPoE-connection.

Problem:
Nearly every day internet connection stops at the same time. But in most cases the omnia also stops working - reforis and luci aren’t available any more and I’ve to press the reset button. Here is the dmesg output:

Why is the omnia freezing? Could you help me, please?

Kind regards

Any ideas?
Interestingly the omnia didn’t hung up for nearly one weak. But today it happened again.

PS: Of course it was the indiegogo campaign :face_with_hand_over_mouth:.

Post the output of dmesg after the problem appeared

Hello,
dmedg-output can be seen in the first post. Unfortunately sometimes the omnia hang up complete so I can’t reach it even via ssh.

It’s definitely a problem with the regular reconnect (after 24 hours) through my internet provider. Sometime the Turris is able to reconnect and sometimes it fails. When reconnect fails I’ve to restart it with the reboot button because ssh and luci aren’t reachable.

The big terrifying problem is, after this reboot all logs are removed - what the hell??? Therefore I cannot post further dmesg output.

Any ideas?

You have to use flash (USB) or SSD and set logs retention in reForis…

Edit: After a reboot logs a stored again under “/srv/log/”. So lets wait for the next hang up. Thank you!

Hi,
I used the log retention option in reForis some time ago, but new logs were stored in “/var/log/”. Do you know, whether the option in reForis should make changes in “/etc/syslog-ng.conf”? As you can see, syslog-ng stores the logs in “/var/log/messages”

# Collect all local logs into a single file /var/log/messages.
# See https://www.syslog-ng.com/technical-documents/list/syslog-ng-open-source-edition

@include "scl.conf"

	chain_hostnames(no); # Enable or disable the chained hostname format.
	create_dirs(yes);
	keep_hostname(yes); # Enable or disable hostname rewriting.
	log_fifo_size(256); # The number of messages that the output queue can store.
	log_msg_size(1024); # Maximum length of a message in bytes.
	stats(freq(0)); # The period between two STATS messages (sent by syslog-ng, containing statistics about dropped logs) in seconds.
	flush_lines(0); # How many lines are flushed to a destination at a time.
	use_fqdn(no); # Add Fully Qualified Domain Name instead of short hostname.
};

# syslog-ng gets messages from syslog-ng (internal) and from /dev/log

source src {
	internal();
	unix-dgram("/dev/log");
};

source net {
	network_localhost();
};

source s_network {
	default-network-drivers(
		# NOTE: TLS support
		#
		# the default-network-drivers() source driver opens the TLS
		# enabled ports as well, however without an actual key/cert
		# pair they will not operate and syslog-ng would display a
		# warning at startup.
		#
		#tls(key-file("/path/to/ssl-private-key") cert-file("/path/to/ssl-cert"))
	);
};

source kernel {
	file("/proc/kmsg" program_override("kernel"));
};

destination messages {
	file("/var/log/messages");
};

log {
	source(src);
	source(net);
	source(kernel);
	destination(messages);

	# uncomment this line to open port 514 to receive messages
	#source(s_network);
};

I’m afraid you have to edit pertinent scripts (asI did long time ago) :wink:

There is one strange error message before the regular reconnect through my ISP. It repeats for several hours:

Oct 24 09:54:52 turris kernel: [421048.581856] mvneta f1034000.ethernet eth2: bad rx status 0ccb4000 (overrun error), size=408

Do you have the option to connect to the Omnia via serial console? In case it’s an IP configuration issue the serial console should still provide access.

Unfortunately I have no serial to usb cable :frowning:

Post the output of:
ethtool -S eth2

This might be physical layer errors. So I suspect dirty connector or some tx/rx flow control to tune

ethtool -S eth2:

At the moment there are no tx/rx errors and I haven’t seen them before. Maybe this is the reason for the stuck? But as I mentioned, I had to reboot the Omnia via hardware button. Now the only error message is:

Oct 24 19:37:55 turris odhcp6c[6493]: Failed to send SOLICIT message to ff02::1:2 (Network unreachable)

Thanks for your help!

Edit:
reForis also says, the IPv6 connection is broken.

The hang ups are definitely associated with the reconnects through my ISP. As I’ve found no solution, I made a scheduled task to reboot the omnia every night. This works now for several days, but it’s more a workaround than a real solution…
Interesting to note: A simple
ifup wan
didn’t help.

Full reboot is not even a workaround try doing ip link down and then up maybe it could work instead of full reboot. Also maybe write some script to monitor this:

# cat /sys/kernel/debug/sfp/state

Until solution is found
