Turris 4.x | Omnia | Wifi configuration leads to an unstable router

Hi,

I recently received a Turris Omnia, and for some reason, everything on it wants to die.

  • DHCP4 will sometime not start.
  • Sometime, nothing seems to start (no DHCP, no way to communicate with it when using static IP)
  • Froris & Luci just dies randomly
  • DNS will also die from time to time
  • Wifi does not work. (seems related to Wlan 5g not starting most of the time)
  • updating seems to fail, with the same issue as here Error during update, but I am using 4.0.x :upside_down_face:
  • sometimes, foris will fail at the beginning of the initial setup.

At first I thought maybe I got a bad factory image, so I tried these few medkits:
https://repo.turris.cz/hbs/medkit/omnia-medkit-latest.tar.gz
api.turris DOT cz slash openwrt-repo/omnia-stable/medkit/omnia-medkit-latest.tar.gz
api.turris DOTcz slash openwrt-repo/archive/4.0.5
api.turris DOTcz slash openwrt-repo/archive/4.0.6
api.turris DOTcz slash openwrt-repo/archive/4.0.3
(sorry, new users cannot post more than 2 links :upside_down_face: )

(Every time also copying and checking the associated md5/sha1 on the drive)

Each one of these images gave me a same success-rate of random/100.

Current version uses the latest release found at repo.turris DOT cz SLASH hbs/medkit/omnia-medkit-latest.tar.gz
While writing this message, it seems that sshd also died.

I would gladly put some logs, but I really don’t know where to start with this.
Do you have some kind of LTS/safe/this-one-just-works image somewhere?
Is that possible that I just received a faulty device ?

Kind regards,

Nathan

In Foris you have a diagnostics site where you can generate a whole bunch of logs together. Send the resulting *.zip file to turris techsupport, maybe they can help. Unfortunately this will take time (in my case an answer took 6 weeks), as support seems to be overloaded.

You are saying that services are doing and sometimes even randomly. However, there is no error message nor logs, which can even provide us some insights. I’m wondering what I can imagine under the word “die”, which you wrote very often. If I’m looking to Foris or LuCI, which according to you just die randomly. It means - slow loading, some HTTP status code, throws you a trackback or it does not show anything (which I doubt)?

I’d suggest reading the article in our documentation for Getting help or following our recommended procedure for using a re-flash method in our documentation. You were in some cases using not recommended medkit and some of them may not be compatible with a newer batch of Turris Omnia routers due to the new u-boot version and there must be a symlink for boot script. You shouldn’t use omnia-stable medkit nor api.turris.cz at all.

Hi,

First, I’d like to thank you both for your answer!
I agree, this first message was all but ideal on that point, I just did not knew where to start with that.

I tried to focus on wifi related issues tonight, and get you some infos about that. I have some logs from /var/log, but was not able to get any from the foris interface, since this one is unreachable most of the time.

First here are some infos:

Informations:

  • foris version: 100.7
  • Device Turris Omnia
  • Serial number 60129543419
  • Turris OS version 4.0.5
  • Turris OS branch hbs
  • Kernel version 4.14.162

What I did:

  • start the router
  • login to foris
  • try to setup a wifi 5ghz, radio0, 802.11ac, 40mhz, channel auto, wpa2-psk

Wifi does not show on any of my devices. Fiddle around the settings,
try 2Ghz, etc.

Ok, now, let’s check the luCI interface. Same behavior. So I go back to forris
and 500/503. (The index showing choice between foris and luCI is available).
