"Stále aktuální už devátým rokem. Český router Turris 1.x má stejný software jako novější model" - Zive.cz

For our English speaking friends:

Even an 8-year-old router is not old: Turris has released a new version of Turris OS 5.3, which will ensure full functionality even for the first generation of devices from 2013

Turris has launched a new version of the operating system for its devices, which can also be installed on the first, iconic versions of the routers launched as part of a research project in 2013. While most ICT devices that are 8 years old can no longer be used or are very complicated to use in a world of constant technological advances, the first Turris routers provide their users with the same level of security and features as the latest devices.

2013 as a milestone for Turris

In 2013, the Czech national domain administrator CZ.NIC introduced its research project based on the Turris router, which was able to analyse traffic between the Internet and the home network and identify suspicious data flows. In the event that an attack was detected, updates were created and automatically distributed to the entire network of connected Turris routers, helping to protect all users. The project included 1,000 of the then-legendary dark blue Turris 1.0 routers and an additional 800 Turris 1.1 routers.

Due to the success and interest on the part of the users, the project subsequently participated in an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign and the mass-produced Turris Omnia router became a security legend among computer enthusiasts.

8 years in ICT can mean 5 to 7 generations

It’s 2012 and Apple is introducing its new iPhone 5 and 9.7-inch iPad with Retina display. Right at the beginning of 2013, Microsoft unveils its new Lumia 900 smartphone running Windows Phone, which is now ancient history. At Mobile World Congress, HTC launched its new flagship One X and Nokia shone with the Symbian Belle-powered 808. In the HW world, the new Raspberry Pi mini-computer, priced from $25, caused a stir, being the first of its category and succeeding in building a large community of users and developers, and internet-connected smart TVs that allowed active selection of content to be watched began to take centre stage.

Instagram came out with its first Android app, and just a few days later Facebook bought it for $1 billion. In the summer, Tesla began shipping the first Model S electric cars and Elon Musk unveiled his vision of Superchargers, of which there are now more than 30,000 worldwide. Felix Baumgartner flew at the speed of sound when he parachuted out of the stratosphere, and Edward Snowden may have been preparing for the 2013 revelations of NSA spying practices.

While bitcoin started 2013 at $20, by the end of November it had crossed $1,000 and the first bitcoin ATM was launched in Vancouver, Canada. Netflix bought the House of Cards franchise and began its steep growth.

Most of the milestones and products mentioned above belong to the distant past. Today, iPhone users can’t imagine working with iPhone 5 well enough to carry a fifth or even seventh phone in their pockets since then, current internet speeds are many times faster than the standard of the time, and most hardware manufactured in 2013 is literally old hat.

Even the first generation of Turris routers is not obsolete

Now, in early 2022, Turris has released version 5.3 of the operating system, which will completely update the iconic first version of the routers from 2013 and ensure full functionality.* Backward compatibility ensures that the first Turris routers remain technologically competitive and provide users with full protection using the continuously improved Turris Sentinel security system. Continuous automatic updates based on intelligently detected attacks thus protect networks behind both the latest models and the first ever Turris routers. In addition, backward compatibility will also apply to the upcoming next generation Turris OS 6.

A detailed description of the software update of the first Turris routers using a USB flash drive is described in the Turris documentation or covered in the ninth volume of Turris Academy.

“We are constantly improving our products and the Turris Sentinel security system. But that doesn’t mean we don’t think about the users who founded our community. The ingeniously thought-out and hardware-over-dimensional design of the first Turris router allows us to still take advantage of the capabilities of our first generation of routers, which was created in 2013 as part of the CZ.NIC research project. Our system of internet threat detection and automatic security updates for the entire Turris user community fully protects even the owners of the oldest devices," says Petr Palán, head of the Turris project, on the launch of the new Turris OS 5.3 version.

*) The new version of Turris OS must now be installed manually by inserting a USB disk with the system on the oldest routers due to the lower memory capacity. All security system updates are then performed automatically.
