HDD over USB3 disconecting

Hey there,

I have strange problem with my 2 HDD’s connected over usb-hub which is connected to usb3.0 port on back of my TO.

/: Bus 05.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 5000M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 5000M
        |__ Port 2: Dev 5, If 0, Class=Mass Storage, Driver=usb-storage, 5000M
        |__ Port 3: Dev 4, If 0, Class=Mass Storage, Driver=usb-storage, 5000M
/: Bus 04.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 480M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 480M
/: Bus 03.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 5000M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Mass Storage, Driver=usb-storage, 5000M
/: Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci-hcd/1p, 480M
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=orion-ehci/1p, 480M

I gave up on trying to connect the drives using uas driver, althouthg it works anywhere else…
But even when the HDD’s are connected this way, they only work unless there is not heavy traffic going on.

I noticed some problem first time after creating raid1 using btrfs, the fs get corupted and disconected very fast, and I was thinking, ok btrfs is unstable.
So I formated the drives and I have created raid1 using mdadm and waited for initial resync, which crashed after few minutes leaving the array with only 1 drive and marking the other drive as faulty.
I rebooted and tried again, respectively I have re-add drive that was “faulty” and started recovery, this time watching closely dmesg, and again the recovery crashed after few minutes, leaving only 1 drive in array.

Reason why both btrfs and mdadm are not able to work is seen in dmesg bellow.
USB start throwing errors usb 5-1.x: reset SuperSpeed USB device number x using xhci-hcd and after while one of the devices eventualy give up with glorious error messages
[ 888.137179] xhci-hcd f10f8000.usb3: ERROR: unexpected setup address command completion code 0x11.
[ 888.356851] usb 5-1.2: device not accepting address 3, error -22
[ 888.363459] usb 5-1.2: USB disconnect, device number 3
leaving the mdadm with one drive only resulting fail of recovery/resync.
Then the drive who did have fail will reconect as new drive (sde) (originally drives were sdc and sdd)

So basically every heavy operation on drives makes them unusable as they crash and reconect as different drive, and I am loosing my mind as I googled the issue for several hours without any result.

Please help.

I forgot to write, that when I take the usb hub with drives exactly as they were connected to TO and connect the usb hub to my laptop, all is smooth, the drives are connected using uas driver, and mdadm recovery is working flawesly.

Is it a hub with external power? What kind of disk - SSD or magnetic?

The USB 3.0 port should only allow drawing 0.9 A, which is barely sufficient for one disk. Or plainly insufficient if it’s a magnetic disk. That would be in line with your observations that the disk fails under load. Your laptop might break the standard and allow drawing more power from the port (or, if it’s a USB 3.1 port, it would allow more even by standard).

Generally speaking, you should always connect magnetic drives via externally powered USB hubs. With SSD, you might be lucky with just port-powered ones. The datasheet of the disk should tell you if it’s okay with 0.9 A, but this might be more complicated because of some peaks in the consumption…

Thanks for suggestion, the hub itself can be powered, but the adapter wasn’t included.
I tried to bypass the hub and I did connect the HDD’s directly to the turris front and rear usb port.
First it looked like it helped, but then after 20 minutes one of the HDD died again :frowning:
Also this time the disconected drive didn’t reconnect.

Both HDD’s are 3.5’ (1x WD, 1x Seagate), powered with omnia itself - the usb/sata adapter does have power jack for 12V input and omnia does have 12V output on internal header for disk power.

So I’m confused… do you provide external power to the drives or not? Running a 3,5" drive with only USB power is silly and can’t work.

Omnia does have internal header with +12V for powering 3.5’ HDD, eg in NAS perk, thats what I’m using for powering my drives.
obrazek

So you’re using some SATA-USB conversion, but the SATA power is taken from the header? It’d really help if you fully described the device(s) you use to connect the drives.

Okay, that seems good. Did you already try to get the 12 V somewhere else than from the header on Omnia?

I’ll try it monday, I have forgot the adapters, both 5V for the usb hub and 12V for drives, at work :man_facepalming:

Additional power source (5V) didn’t help, hdd is still disconnecting.
I tried to measure the usb hub using usb tester I get from my friend, it is only usb 2.0 tester but after connecting the drives through this usb tester, the connection was degraded to 480mbps but the error message in dmesg doesn’t appear and drive didn’t disconnect.
I think the failure is in the sw driver itself, USB 3.0 driver doesn’t work, while USB 2.0 driver work fine, but very slow…

Any else ideas? Should I try to contact official support @Pepe?

I tried different usb 3.0 hub, and suddennly, raid is stable, zero error messages in dmesg. Apparently there must be something between usb/sata controller and omnia usb controller that does not work. Putting in the middle usb-hub with different usb controller bypass the issue.

Thanks for ideas @peci1
