2.5Gbps mode not working with ODI DFP-34X-2C2 SFP module

Hi there!

After watching this “Van Tech Corner Replace ISP ONU with PON Stick” video on youtube, I managed this module to work (ISP MZNet Fibra from Brazil, VLAN ID 2000) in my Turris Omnia running TOS 6.0.4:

Perhaps, the 2.5Gb mode is not recognized. I can set it on the ODI telnet cmdline (as reported in this repo), but it is downgrading to 1Gb mode, as below:

ODI boot log:

I also cannot force it, by disabling auto negotiation:

root@turris:~# ethtool -s eth2 autoneg off speed 2500 duplex half
Cannot set new settings: Invalid argument
  not setting speed
  not setting duplex
  not setting autoneg
root@turris:~# ethtool -s eth2 autoneg off
Cannot set new settings: Invalid argument
  not setting autoneg
root@turris:~# ethtool -s eth2 speed 2500 duplex half
Cannot advertise speed 2500 duplex half
root@turris:~# ethtool -s eth2 speed 2500
Cannot advertise speed 2500

Is there anything I can do, or 1Gbps is the maximum throughput I can have with this setup?

There is no speed 2500 half duplex maybe thats the case

Good point @AreYouLoco, thanks for noting that!
As it didn’t worked with my first settings, I am now just exploring both sides, trying to understand what is causing this issue.

On Turris side, I tried as many things as I could, like trying to enable/disable auto negotiation, speed settings, and duplex mode (half and full). I am getting this “Cannot set new settings: Invalid argument” message with each of these settings I try to apply.

On ODI module side, there is a variable (LAN_SDS_MODE) with 3 modes that 2.5Gbps (theoretically) works. Any of these modes needs flashing this variable and rebooting the module. Every mode I flash gets downgraded to 1Gbps mode when router recognizes spf module and starts communicating with it.

I am starting to think now that it may have something to be with that rj45 1Gbps port that Turris “switches” while booting up (or, maybe, something with the driver itself).
So, is there anyone that could manage any other sfp module to work with more than 1Gbps total throughput in Turris Omnia?

There is one module, that delivers 2,5 GB/s, but not pure SFP but a SFP to RJ45 copper-adapter sold by Turris Team (officially supported). Haven’t seen any other module with 2,5 GB/s reported working yet.

Got it!
There must be some kind of signaling, or better hardware integration that makes that module to work.

Maybe someone in Turris Team could help identifying.

Try and contact support via official email (see thread by @Pepe) or open issue via gitlab, their developers are not watching this forum.

Edit: and please report back here whether those investigations have a positive outcome/link the gitlab-thread.

Hi guys!

For anyone who maybe facing the same problem, or not, I have opened up an issue in gitlab, as follows:
2.5 GBps mode not being advertised/recognized

Hi, this is completely not a issue of your OS. This module has its EEPROM(not in the module’s flash but a dedicated chip connected to sfp port, to make host os get the information of the module and switch to correct speed mode) set to 1000mbps mode rather than 2500mbps mode. You can check the discussion here for more details: Right SFP EEPROM config for DFP-34X-2C2 to work automatically work at 2500base-X? · Anime4000/RTL960x · Discussion #250 · GitHub
