Omnia initial issues

Hi,
I have just installed omnia, looks good and seems really fast, however during installation and some time after I faced several issues and some of them are not much pleasant especially considering we waited more than 6 months and the router itself is bit costy (250$+).

  • pppoe cannot be set correctly during initial installation, so I had to skip wizard, setup luci password and set it up there correctly and after auto update only small ppp foris fixed info was shown, this definately deserves errata record - why its not there? Also friend of mine told me he faced the same issue, wrote also an email to support more than week ago and no answer, but he didnt noticed that ppp fixed in foris flash message, so he didnt know its fixed till I told him now.

  • collectd is not working. if I skip that default configuration miss a lot of dirs there and there and requires several manual steps apart from standard openwrt installation through luci, then it is not working for me. I am in the middle of investigation however I`ve just ended that it segfaults after it forks. Some plugin (I installed few more of them) is suspected and the issue is similar to this https://github.com/openwrt/packages/issues/2551

sample output from strace -f:
[pid 20494] — SIGSEGV {si_signo=SIGSEGV, si_code=SEGV_MAPERR, si_addr=0xb6a9ec78} —
[pid 20495] <… ioctl resumed> , 0xb6b02760) = 0
[pid 20494] +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
[pid 20493] +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
[pid 20492] +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
[pid 20491] +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
[pid 20495] +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++

  • sshd was not starting up (second errata issue), even after I performed factory reset 2 times, strange, maybe I did something wrong, but I`ve just followed the yt video. Anyway there is another way how to fix it and to update /etc/local script through luci with the provided command and reboot the router, much easier than starting looking for a serial cable :wink:

  • cpu temperature is too high
    root@turris:~# sensors
    armada_thermal-virtual-0
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1: +74.6°C
    Can you please share why there is no heatsink which was mentioned several times during manufacturing process and original turris has one? Do you think we should buy a heatsink as 75°C looks quite high to me? Btw my overclocked i7 has about 40°C in idle, which is almost half as omnia.

Do you have some bug tracker? It would be really good to clearly see list of discovered defects, submited logs, dumps, etc. and start fixing them (I am pretty sure there are some of us willing to help with this, including me). I noticed you have github page, however it doesn`t seem to be much active and only 3 issues are there. Can you please share your thoughts what is the best way to help you with making turris (omnia) better? As there are definately some blank spaces in the process of recording defects, investigating them and fixing them.

edit:found this forum https://www.turris.cz/forum/board_show.pl?bid=1 however its in czech (original turris forum), don`t know if its still valid place for omnia defects and also english only forum is better in my opinion.

edit2: collectd issue seems to be also for original turris router - see original turris forum

Thanks.

Thanks for pointing these out!
+1 for a bug tracker.
Hopefully support will answer soon.

Note - mine is at 77C at idle, definitely weird :neutral_face:

no, it isn’t… there’s already a thread were people figured out that those temperatures are normal for this SoC:

Issues can be find here: https://gitlab.labs.nic.cz/groups/turris/issues
but +1 for proper bugtracker. What I know they’re using some ticket system internally.

For SSH, it is a very common and very unfortunate problem. See a description and the solution in https://discourse.labs.nic.cz/t/ssh-server-configuration/915/8
