Omnia 3.10 disappeared Wi-Fi

Hi guys!

I have a similar problem. After the update to 3.10 my 2Ghz card (R11e-2HPnD) and my SATA disk are gone. Both are no longer accessible in the system and also can no longer be found via lspci.

With a MEDKIT-reset, we were back. After a reboot, however, the problem occurs again. What happened during the update? There is something wrong with the PCI ports now!

It’s a Omnia 2GB device.

What can we do?

The problem suspected in this topic is not global PCI problem but rather problem with single card and its single revision. Because of that I suspect that you have different problem.

Please reboot your device and post output from dmesg (as soon as possible after reboot). That should give us better understanding what is happening in your case. But I suspect that your problem is rather missing firmware or kernel driver. So could you also check what packages are being removed when you update to Turris 3.10?

Not sure if I have the same issue, but I have the same symptoms. Well, except 5GHz wlan is still visible on lspci output.
“Solution” I am using is either several reboots (so long until ath10k_pci start to work) or power off and power on again.

Cards are mounted:

Our experience is that WiFi cards are pretty hot, so in your case, there are two solutions.

  1. Put the heatsink on 5 GHz card and see if it helps for you
  2. If you live in Prague I can pick up your router and give it to our HW guys and they will change the capacitors or you can send it to us.

(Lorem ipsum)

i reboot my router and now the 5Ghz Wifi is on again.

Is there any possible to check, if 5Ghz card is faulty? From serial number or such? I have indiegogo 2GB + Wifi perk :disappointed_relieved:, but I deinstall 5Ghz card from the start (even before first plug I think), because I dont need it yet (and not all my devices supports 5Ghz)…

Btw., I think its strange that those problems appears to some users after 3.10 update, at least it seems to me that way.

@Jan.H should know serial numbers. It’s also somewhere here on forum. It’s about a year old problem.

Problem with it is that it’s caused by interference on board. That specific card has fault where it’s more prone to be affected by it. Two right slots share reference time and if one of cards generates some noise then it can affect second card if it doesn’t have sufficient filtering. Real problem is that this noise don’t have to be just from second card but also from other sources. So this can start happening just because you moved router to some spot with just right problematic interference. That is why it propagates dynamically. But it might not ever show. All boards propagating given error are requested to be sent to us for repair (as pepe wrote, capacitors change). It makes no sense to recall all routers because most of them wont encounter problem because it really depends on combination of factors. In my case for example it manifested when I tried to move a lot of data to drive (connected using SATA card). I swapped ac and g cards, ac being in left most port and since then I had no problems. But we failed to reproduce it for example with msata or other cards.
As you can see there is no guaranteed way to ensure that it won’t happen or that it happens. That capacitors replacement is more or less just hack to overcome this specific problem but when some card misbehaves then there is nothing hardware designer can do.

And why it seems to be problematic with 3.10? I don’t think that it’s. But even if it would then it’s possible that some software change just makes it more inclined to this problem. But I currently know only about one person that started having problems after 3.10. Other one in this topic encounters problems for longer time period. And I don’t know about anyone else.

So, now from me three different dmesg outputs I have generated today. The behavior of the Omnia is currently not reproducible. Problems definitely occurred since the weekend and after the update to 3.10. Everything was stable before.

I really need assistance here!

a) All cards work (mSATA, 802.11n, 802.11ac)

  • Yesterday evening I added a new device to the network, a iPhone 7.
Then after a reboot the WLE900VX 7AA didn’t show up anymore.
  • As it after three reboots still wouldn’t show up, I reverted firmware-5.bin back to default-one. Can’t tell if that was the real trigger but wifi showed up after (4th) reboot and I decided to not reboot again for now (as the WAF of a not showing up wifi is pretty much zero).

I will watch that behaviour like a hawk for the next time and report again if it shows up again…

Update 2018Jun07: The problem is not linked to alternate firmware-5.bin and keeps occuring after each reboot… :frowning: what to do to stop it?

I am also having the same problem.

    root@turris:~# lspci
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 6820 (rev 04)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 6820 (rev 04)
00:03.0 PCI bridge: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 6820 (rev 04)
01:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

This happens every time I restart the router.

I correct it manually by removing the file /etc/config/wireless and then it shows up correctly on the web page.

How do I fix this issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

That unfortunately doesn’t work for me.

@cynerd maybe there was some change in 3.10 update as to how the hardware is utilized? some driver update -> power management -> interference ?

I cannot tell exactly how, but the following is always working: When rebooting disconnect power, wait for some minutes (to cool down the wifi-card in slot 2?), reconnect power.
Maybe the WiFi-card (WLE1216V5-20) gets to hot and won’t come up OR it is the interference-problem @cynerd described. OR maybe both?

Same problem here, radio0 5Ghz is missing since a few days (10 days). It was working fine before.

config wifi-device 'radio0'
	option type 'mac80211'
	option hwmode '11a'
	option path 'soc/soc:pcie-controller/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/0000:02:00.0'
	option htmode 'VHT80'
	option country 'FR'
	option txpower '20'
	option channel '36'

But device pci for this radio seems missing:

Rebooting fixes this issue, but just for a while.
How to fix that ?

best regards,
Edouard

Question: Do you have a kickstarter (revision 01)-board?
If so, its routcause maybe misdesigned capacitors (see post above Omnia 3.10 disappeared Wi-Fi).
As I don’t live in Prague, I desided to circumvent it (by doing cold reboots) until I’ve build my own router-server. Afterwards I will only reboot it as an access point after a software update.

Thank you for your answer. Yes it’s a kickstarter board.

Before Omnia I was using a netgear WNDR3800 that had exactly the same problem after a couple of years. Had to reboot it every day… So I ended up at that time with my own router, but wanted something more robust. That’s why I bought an Omnia, quite expensive. But now, same problem with the Omnia… I guess there is no RMA ?

I will try the heatsink too. Is there a thermal sensor on the ATH wifi board ?

Hello,

Your unit should be still under warranty as for Indiegogo backers, we have extended warranty period to 3 years.
I’ll write to you soon, and we’ll figure it out.

Hi @Pepe,
i’m also indiegogo backers and have same issue, i have only 5GHz and MSATA card installed, but sometimes WLAN disappeared, led PC2 go off. It’s any option how can i connect support to replace, or send debug log?

Omnia - 2GB RAM

Hi,

Would you please reach us on tech.support@turris.cz?
If you can send us diagnostics, which you can generate in Foris, when it isn’t working and when it works, it would be good.

I’m not sure if I or somebody else will respond to you this week as many people have a vacation this week including me, however, at the latest you should get the answer by January 2nd.
