Happy New Year 2021 and recap of this year

Dear Turris friends,

There are just a few hours left in 2020 at least in the Czech Republic, where are making for you Turris routers and provide support for them as Turris is developed by CZ.NIC company, which is .CZ registry. Before there we will do summary of highlights of what we did, we would like to wish you a Happy New Year!

So, let’s gonna take a look at the most interesting things, which we did. I can speak most of the software team, which I am part of and we will also look at things, which we are preparing and we will introduce them in the next year!

Software:

  • OpenWrt 18.06 and OpenWrt 19.07

OpenWrt developers released a new version of OpenWrt 19.07 and we need to provide automatic updates from Turris OS 4.x, which was based on top of OpenWrt 18.06, which is now EoL by OpenWrt developers and as well we are not longer provide support for Turris OS 4.x. I will need to say that we were succesfull in providing it, but there were some hiccups, which we took a look and hopefully it will be smoother when there is a new release of OpenWrt.

  • redesigned Foris (reForis)

This year was challenging for our web developer team as @Bogdan decided to try new opportunities and we wish him luck in his new venture! We hired new colleagues, who are taking care of reForis. We welcome on board Bogdan’s friend - @Aleksan4eg and Marek, who is not registered on this forum, yet.

In reForis, there is an option to add your own DNS servers, which you want. You can find in reForis Snapshot plugin, Data collection and that’s not all, there is OpenVPN client module and in Turris OS 5.2.0, there is a Dashboard and owners of Turris Shield can enjoy it already!

In the upcoming year, there is going to be Storage and Nextcloud plugin, Honeypot as Service plugin, and a lot more features.

  • Improvements in Turris:Sentinel

We created new minipots for HTTP, SMTP and FTP. There are already more than 1 million records and most of them are related to SMTP. We are looking forward to a new data collector from firewall logs, which should be introduced soon.

Kernel team:
Even though the kernel team is part of the SW team, it deserves its own chapter. We welcome on board, Pali (Pavol) and who is working along side with Marek Thanks to them for their work as they were able to take a look at SDIO issues, so guest Wi-Fi is working well now than in previous releases. They are working on improvements and changes related to Marvell Armada 3720, which is using Turris MOX and Marvell ESPRESSObin.

System team:

  • will be added!

Social media:

  • subreddit Turris will become official our channel for bringing you new news!
  • We take over of Czech fan page for Turris routers, which was maintained by @Nones on Facebook and we would like to thank him for his efforts!

What’s next in social media? We have a new colleague, welcome her on board and he will prepare for you Turris Academy. More details will be revealed soon.

Hardware

  • Turris Omnia 2020 is certified by FCC!
  • Introduced Turris Shield

and a lot more!

We welcome new colleagues on board even those who were not mentioned and wish them luck!
Happy New Year, Turris users!
